MParsons, is there a way to not have to build the drum tracks using ezdrummer? I know superior 2 can load the drum kit from hell but how do I use or browse the grooves using it? I don't see any groove window to go in and browse then drag/drop the grooves the way I can with EZ.TEAM R2R 2014.11.25 | WiN: 88.86 MB | MAC: 80.31 MB I'll mess around with it more but that's that for now. I'd rather have those for 2 more toms.Īnd in Superior 2.0, it also lumps them all into 1 bus rather than separate toms. In EZdrummer, when you split them from just a basic stereo mix into individual buses (I think that's what it's called) all of the toms get lumped into bus 5 and I could honestly do without the lower snare mic and the overall comp mix bus being used.

This was the first time I played around with it and I think at this point, I need to figure out how to get the toms separated individually so I can use samples on those also becuase right now, they're all treated like 1 mic is on all of them. The only thing I'm still struggling with is the overhead and room/ambient mic's and how much they actually need to be in the mix.

I'm honestly surprised that I was able to figure it all out and everything actually work without any real headaches or anything.

I just thought Devin hired Gene Hoglan to wear it out.Īnyways, I used acid pro 7 to do everything with the recording/mixing and I built the drum track using EZdrummer and then separated the mic's in Acid so I had an invidiual slider for each mic and an FX chain for each mic as well so I used the waves SSL 4000's chris lord alge preset eq's for each respective part of the kit and then on the kick and snare channel, I inserted the drumagog plugin and told it to use the kick sample on the kick's channel and then loaded the drumagog plugin on the snare's fx chain and use the snare sample for that so I had the snare and kick samples going like that. REALLY good drumming, almost TOO good but I know that there are guys out there who are like machines behind the kit so I never imagined it was a drum program doing it. Regarding commercial use of "fake" drums, I think devin townsend uses ezdrummer or one of it's variants and I never knew until I read about it. Yeah I used the nitro on all the parts and just used various eq'ings and different guitars. My Adam A7's will hopefully show up this week (coming from Canada so not sure how long they'll be stuck in customs) so I may hear tons of things that need to be changed that my BX8a's didn't let me hear. The people that have heard it so far dig the bass riff during the post chorus breakdown at 1:47 and then the more melodic bass part that follows up in the quiet part after it.Īnyways, that's all I got. So I wrote a unique bass line for this one from the ground up that rarely sticks with the rhythm player. All too often, he'll fall into a comfort zone of simply mimicking our rhythm player rather than branching out to try different melodies and then when we go to the studio, he'll come up at the last minute and want some cool parts to play, which I really like but wish he would come to me sooner hahah! I also used this song as a springboard for our bassist. I didn't do anything different with guitars.just recorded them like normal.

It was my first attempt at doing this but after hearing our producer in ATL use samples that some famous old school engineer did that nickleback, linkin park, chevelle, foo fighters, etc all use, I heard how much of a difference they can make (most noticeably on the kick and snare) so I'm giving that a shot to see how they work out and it's surprisingly easy to get them sounding ok. It was my first time messing with actual individual mics so for the first time, I got the chance to not only do a little eq work on each component of the kit but I also took the liberty of using the drumagog sampler plugin This mix was more or less dedicated to making better sounding drums. they got lumped into 1 bus without me realizing it.Īnyways, let me know what you guys think overall of the mix as a whole or I guess more specifically if there are any things I can do to make the drums sound better. The one thing I didn't do on this one was separate the toms. I got superior drummer 2.0 for more in depth drum editing like gating, eq'ing, limiter, etc with the various drum kit mics and I used EZdrummer's drumkit from hell to build all the grooves.
